riverpaw held his head high as he walked through the swamp looking for his mentor. he was better than this! why had his father made him a healer before leaving? why? riverpaw was built like a warrior, strong, bold, brave, but...he was, deep down, meant to be a medicine cat. he knew that, he just kept it hidden. "tearlight?" he asked rather rudely. he wasn't going to be a happy apprentice.
his eyes scanned the clearing anxiously searching for the clan's medicine cat. his tail lashed as he grew impatient. he had never been a patient person. he breathed in the scent of herbs around him, positive that he would never understand what they were. he hissed softly. he had to tolerate this, he didn't have to like it.

Tearlight~Ears perked at the sound of her name. She continued shuffling through her stores of herbs. The smell of another cat permeated through her den. Breathing in and recognizing the scent, she stepped forward out of the shadows.
" Yes? I am here. Do you need something? " She asked kindly
She stepped out of her den, looking at the cat in front of her. He didn't look happy. She wondered what he required of her. Flicking her tail and bringing her paw over her ear, she removed dust particles that had clung to her fur. [/blockquote] OOC: sorry it kind of sucked

typical. just what he needed, a cat that seemed almost to nice. she already reminded him of his sister in the way she had responded with such perfectly constructed statements. "i am your apprentice," he muttered as if the answer were obvious. he kept his gaurd up and remained rather tense in the entrance of her den, ready for anything. not that he thought that she would attack him, he was just a little jittery.
apprentice to the medicine cat. that statement would haunt him for the remainder of what he hoped was a short life. his fur was ruffled by a slight breeze and he sighed. it was a hopeless cause, he'd never be anything more than "tearlights apprentice".

"Ah I see" She said a glint of understanding crossing her face. Perhaps she would not fail in training this apprentice as she had two times before. Tearlight was still young and would be able to serve as the Shadowclan medicine cat for a while yet. Still there remained the fact that she would eventually need to assign the position to someone else. When that time came she hoped the apprentice would be ready and willing.
A silent pray was also sent up to Starclan let him not discover my secret, it needs to stay hidden
"You may come in, My den is now also yours" She turned beckoning with a black tipped tail. Padding into the shadows of her den she didn't even bother looking back.

"i am not blind, or crippled," he mumbled more for his benifit than hers. the tom had a bad habit of talking to himself and being more than alittle to tempermental. "i could be a better use to shadowclan elsewhere." he said forcefully. he was obviously trying to convince himself that he wasn't meant to be here. but how could he? he was standing in this den beside tearlight, no denying that, not at all.
starclan had brought him here to be her apprentice and future healer. perhaps in time he'd lose his sight or his hearing. maybe he'd break a leg. than he could be a real healer's apprentice. crippled, and unneeded elsewhere.
OOC:: sorry his feelings towards medicine cats are very...hateful, lol.

" If you truly feel like you are not useful here; then you may leave, No one is stopping you." Her grey eyes pierced his pelt. " Or if you prefer to stay; you can make yourself useful" She knew the time for courtesy was past. It was no use arguing with him if he didn't want to be here. Her whole body was tense. She didn't want him to leave, she needed an apprentice desperately. Wisely though she would leave the decision to him. " Its your choice" she mewed. [/blockquote]

riverpaw held her gaze, his attitude was that of a leader's son and heir. rightfully it should be him not those traitorous apprentices taking his father's spot. it should've been him not acornstar that replaced his father. for many generations it had been in his family, his grandfather, than his father and now he had let them down. he had become a medicine cat apprentice, instead of a leader.
"im staying." he said curtly, nodding his head towards her herbs. "you might as well start teaching me."

" Good to hear." She dropped her gaze, turning towards the herbs. "I suppose we shall start with what these herbs are and what they are used for." She gathered a bundle of leaves placing them on the ground. " This is marigold" She mewed motioning at the pile on the ground. "It is used to treat infections and heal wounds" Carefully with her paws she placed the marigold onto the surface of a dock leaf; folding it over and pushing it back into its place. She proceeded to tell Riverpaw the names of several other herbs and there uses. " I sure hope your listening because you are going to need to remember all of this" [/blockquote]

riverpaw nodded his understanding occasionally. "tearlight," he began biting his lower lip. "why did you become a medicine cat?" he looked at the she-cat, she seemed in rather good health.

Tearlight froze, surprised by the question. " Well . . . I . . " she stuttered not sure how so answer the question. " Um . . ." her mouth was agape, and she was struggling to find the right words." I suppose I should start at the beginning" She sighed curling her tail around her legs. Well here goes, my whole life story I guess
" When I was kit, my father abandoned me. Shadestar left me out in the cold, snowy wild to die. Far away from any of the clans or other cats. And I would have just as surely died if she hadn't found me. The loner nursed me back to health. She taught me all she knew of medicine and also of Starclan for she had once been a clan cat. I spent many moons with her learning my trade. I felt it was the only thing for me to do. In time she joined the starry ranks of Starclan.
It was then that I finally decided to come back to the clan cat's forest. Though not to the clan that had left me for dead. Instead I came here to Shadowclan where I was accepted and even given the rank of medicine cat. I was happy to accept that position, because I realized that someone needed to have the responsibility. Not to mention the last med cat had just passed away and there was no apprentice to take her place. I believe Starclan ordained me as such and saved my life in order that I might be here now.
So in answer to your question; it was because I wanted to, and my path was laid out for me. I could have become a warrior if I really wanted to. But I realized my skills would be better utilized as a medicine cat. " Here she paused, twitching her ears nervously
" Does that make sense?" She mewed. [/blockquote]

riverpaw sighed, and nodded. "yes, tearlight, i understand." he mutterred rather curtly. though he showed a blank face he had been listening intently, waiting for what she would say next.

She shifted her paw and mewed " well I suppose we should continue" She didn't feel comfortable continuing on this subject. Some things must stay hidden. She could not even tell her apprentice; it was too dangerous. Her secret too great. But she hid this well, meowing " learning the herbs I mean" her ears flicked, and then she realized how long they had been in her den. She teaching and her apprentice learning. " On second thought how about you take a break; go get some fresh kill or something. We can stop for today." She smiled kindly at her apprentice. [/blockquote]
