Deathcall stared at the sun as it began to fall into the horizon. Brilliant reds and oranges filled the sky and above that was utter darkness. Night was awakening and the day was dying. She curled up with her paws tucked under her and her eyes narrowing to slits. She could feel movement inside her, she hid it well from the rest of the Coven. Her kits would be coming soon and then everyone would know.
Her thoughts flashed backward in time to the day she first came to the Coven. She had come bearing kits, the kits from a clan mate she had killed. The reason she was banned. But his death was for a reason. The good for nothing cat had put poppy seeds in her food each day then waited until she fell asleep. She found out about his treachery and ended his life. Now his kits, her kits, were about to be born.
She jumped to her feet as she heard another cat approaching. Her hair was on end and her claws unsheathed, waiting to defend herself if need be. She sniffed the air and relaxed as she scented another cat for the Coven.

"... BEXXOFCOVENS It was Bexx. And she visibly flinched when she realized who was standing in front of her. From the get-go Deathcall and she had never had met on friend terms. Now, she could see a clear mask of worry creased over the females face. 'Good morning.' Despite their past, Bexx's voice held nothing but warmth. Despite her ability to defend herself, thanks to Lachance's careful coaching, Bexx had always possessed a soft side, and it never failed to shine through to everyone. 'How are you?' she asked, even though it was blatantly obvious that the girl was not okay. ..."

Deathcall forced her fur to lie flat as she recognized the she-cat before her. She almost felt bad for how she had treated her clan mate, she hadn't done anything to her so why was she always so mean to Bexx? "I'm doing fine, could be better but we have to work with what we're given." Her words were soft for the first time, her hidden kindness finally shining through her hard exterior. "And how are you? I've been watching you're skills improve and am glad to see that you can finally hunt well and defend yourself. We wouldn't want anything to happen to you. Who knows how Lachance would react to that."
Her eyes flicked to the ground, not wanting to meet the other cat's eyes for the first time. In truth she was scared, terrified of what was growing inside her. What would the others do? Would she be punished? She was an elite not a kit bearer. Trying to regain her calm she fell back to sit on her haunches, her tail wrapped around her feet and waited to here what Bexx would have to say.

"... BEXX Bexx carefully masked her surprise. 'You're more than right.' she agreed. Bexx blushed, her cheeks heating, feeling as if they were alight by flames. 'Lachance is a good leader, he would mourn the loss like any cat should, if anything should happen.' she replied, her voice becoming slightly stiff with formality before relaxing. 'But, I too, am glad for the skills of those who have grown up around here. I felt behind compared to everyone else. Things are so different where I was born.' she said in attempt to steer away from the subject of her and Lachance, though in truth the subject pleased her very much. Then, her mind turned to the subject that she had first noticed when she had approached Deathcall. But how to go about asking without seeming rude? The girl didn't look well. Finally she murmured, 'I really do hate to pry... But, is anything... Bothering you? You seemed troubled. You can tell me, I won't tell a soul.' But whatever would I not tell them? What is so troublesome that even Deathcall looks weary? ..."

Deathcall shifted her paws nervously, finally the dreaded topic had come up. She let out a small sigh before beginning her story. "Well, I came here because I was exiled from my clan and every clan around the lake. This is because I killed a cat, the other clans didn't see it the same way I did. They weren't violated and forced to carry kits they did not choose to carry. I was force bred by a cat and then I killed him. Now it is almost time for my kits to be born but I'm afraid of what everyone will say. I came here knowing I would give birth, but I didn't tell anyone, not even Lachance. I'm worried that he will punish me, or worse, my kits. I don't know what to do and I can't really hide it anymore." She let out a breath before looking timidly up at the cat before, waiting to hear her words.

"... BEXXELITE Bexx wore a pained expression on her face. She was taken aback, this had not been what she had expected. She glanced at Deathcall, her sturdy sides did seem round. Her feet a little swollen. She hadn't noticed the milk scent because she hadn't even imagined it was there. It seemed to have been what Deathcall was counting on. 'I'm sorry.' she murmured. 'I don't justify to the killing of cats... But what that cat did to you...' she squeezed her eyes shut. She couldn't even imagine what it would be like. It left her stomach in a knot. 'I'll help you... But I don't know how. I don't know if we should tell Lachance... And I don't know how you can care for your kits when they're born.' A subtle idea pushed at the brim of her mind but she forced it down. It wouldn't work, plus she wouldn't want it too. They weren't her kits, they were Deathcall's. They would find some other way around this. Bexx had never felt this unsure in her whole life. ..."

Deathcall looked at Bexx with an expression of relief on her face. She was glad that this cat was willing to help her, though she risked her position and her life in the process. Neither of them were sure what Lachance would do with the kits once they were born. "Thank you." She glanced down at her swelling stomach. "I will protect them with my life. It isn't their fault that this happened to my, they are mine and no one else's."

"... BEXXELITE Bexx gave her a weak smile, her stomach clenching into a tight fist. But how... How could Bexx ever help her? 'We could leave, let you have your kits, find some way to let them be raised nearby and then return. We can pretend we just wanted some time outside of the group.' The instant it was out of her mouth, Bexx regretted it. It was stupid, and would never work. Plus, she didn't want to leave Lachance, but she had promised Deathcall. She wasn't going to loose the one friend she had. Not so soon. And not if Deathcall counted as a friend. She shook her head, nothing came to it. Nothing became clearer. 'I don't know, Deathcall. I really don't. Maybe we should tell Lachance.'
MY OUT OF CHARACTER" yeah, we should... ..."

At Bexx's words Deathcall began to shake her head is disagreement. "No, Lachance would want to know our exact reason for leaving. Besides, I want to raise the kit's myself. I don't trust other cats as well as you might think I do."

L A C H A N C E if i go crazy will you still call me superman, light blue eyes peered through the brush, softly, quietly. "somethings," he murmured in his usual soft voice, "are better left said." of course he hadn't heard the whole conversation but he had heard enough to know something was being hidden from him and he didn't like it. he respected the two femme's space, his head lowerred a bit in respect as was typical of him. his orbs hoverred on bexx, many feelings rushing to the surface only to be reburried under mountains of insecurity. "i do not punish kits," he said, for that was really all he had heard of the quiet conversation.

"... BEXXELITE Bexx swallowed a grin as she saw Lachance enter. She bit the side of her cheek and glanced sideways at Deathcall. Immediately she felt guilt overcome her elation. 'But do you punish mothers of circumstance?' she asked softly, her eyes treading over his fur, his face, and then meeting his eyes. She tilted her chin up a bit to face Lachance better, though he still stood high over her. She didn't dare look at Deathcall, lest reveal her whole story. She still felt bad about even considering keeping something from the man she called 'leader'.

Deathcall looked at Lachance timidly. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you when I came here. I was scared and trying to forget all that had happened. I never meant to be disloyal, I was just trying to protect my unborn kits. Do what you wish to me but please wait until my kits are born and can care for themselves." She hung her head, waiting to hear what her leader would say.

"... BEXXELITE Bexx felt her stomach unknot. It was amazing, she thought. That one little fact, and she felt so much closer to deathcall. She felt unknown tears recede in her eyes. She felt a wave of gratitude towards Lachance. She knew he would do the right and fair thing. She should have trusted him all along. 'Lachance... You're one of the good guys.' Her vioce was sweet if not a bit soggy, a small smile flickered across her face. She should have believed him all along... ..."

Deathcall sighed in relief. "Thank you so much. I promise I won't be a burden and if the kits choose to they too will help the Coven." She had been so worried but it had been for nothing. She just hoped that the kits would come soon, even now it was harder to hunt though she never let anyone know. She glanced at her round belly, wondering how many kits she would have.
